man on the corner
rags are you're closest friends
and the shopping cart, your provider.
you thank the lord every night
man built ledges drooping down
from buildings rooves.
you spend the money you're given
on a pack of minty cigerettes
and a bottle of rye...
they to you are an ocean-
the bridge between dusk
and dawn.
you're eyes reach far off
and you mumble
is it a show
because i know once you were different
once you were a child
once you lived like me.
your hands are dirty
and you forgot your age long ago
the city clock reminds you of time passing
but none of it matters anymore.
while prim and propers
follow their reflections as they pass
you keep your head low
holding your pants up
as you walk
shoes worn to the heel
and hair down your back.
could you cry if i warmed your eyes
could you remember the one thing
that made you let go
could you go back and bury it
behind the cemetry gates.
do you miss the music
and do you miss the dance
what makes us so different?
i have walls to sleep inside
you do not.
this makes you unholy
and makes me plain.
you'll know things we never will
we'll know things you already did.

once i danced on a ledge beside
fire dancers
as evening began to bathe the trees to my right.
walking innocently years ago
with the merry-go-round
blurred gold in it's movement.
long gold hair
waves in my eyes
the models walk through the cobblestone
like ballarinas in russia.
a skinny man in a suit
drives his bike meandering away
with bagette sticking out of his backpack.
i feel happy i dont have to go to work.
the next day i dip brioche
into a bowl of chocolat chaud
and i secretly worry about the quick sand
surrounding the castle in the middle
of the sea.
were driving oh now were walking
i look up
and its a postcard infront of me
big and tall and just
how the movies always looked.
the eiffel tower
is nothing that spectacular
when your young.
its a monument.
the pigeons outside the church
meant more
and i didnt fear a thing.
they grasped onto my canvas coat sleave
as i shyly accept more seed
from the hunchback madame
on the bench.
she smiles so wide
that her eyes are arched lines
concealing any color that was once there.
white and purplish gray feathers,
the peeping sound they make as they make their way into the air
or back to the ground...
i wondered even then
if i would ever forget it.
people people people
everywhere and laughing
and speaking french
speaking french.
she stands beside me
leaning on my arm
we're wearing black berets
and black boots.
a young couple we have never met
takes a picture
and feels pleased with us...
i feel pleased.
every corner is a burgandy colored
boulangerie, pattisarie..
everywhere
cafes
and people lounging in the sun
cross legged and classy.
i feel special
as an outsider
i feel like the night does feel
so much more beautiful.
we skip a million restaurants
as the drunken blue fills the sky.
to my right a million pink flowers curl around
an enchanted entrance.
outside a chalkboard
lists 5 or 6 gourmet dishes
i cant understand.
we go in.
i feel the colors
of deep green, honey, dusk blue and purple.
wine twinkles at every table.
every one looks smart.
everyone is sharp.
after supper
we have coffee ice cream
and i grimace
as i bite into the coffee bean ontop
of the bowl,
as i always do when i have the coffee ice cream.
we walk along the river
did we go on the boat?
i think we did.
yes we did.
i shly pretended not to notice
multiple couples
kissing underneath
the bridges we slid beneath.
it was a dream
mustve been a dream.
